Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Dear Learners and Stakeholders,

Greetings from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University!

I am delighted to share recent exciting developments and achievements at BRAOU. As we move forward, our focus is clear—to make the University more accessible, more digital, more skill-oriented, and more responsive to the evolving needs of learners and society.

BRAOU has always believed that education should reach everyone, everywhere. Established to bring higher education to those who could not access conventional universities, the University has built a strong tradition of inclusive and flexible learning. Today, we are carrying that vision into a new era by combining our rich experience in Open and Distance Learning with digital technology, emerging disciplines, skills, and global partnerships.

BRAOU DIGITAL

One of the most important developments is the permission received from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to offer programmes through the Online mode. In the first phase, we have launched five online programmes—MBA, M.Com, B.Com in Telugu Medium, B.Com in English Medium, and M.A. Telugu. Admissions are now underway. This gives our learners another flexible pathway to pursue higher education, irrespective of where they live or their personal and professional commitments.

At the same time, BRAOU is steadily moving towards becoming a Digital University. Our Learning Management System, BODHI, is at the heart of this transformation. Along with BODHI, we are strengthening a range of digital initiatives, including learning resources, educational broadcasting, digital libraries, online learning and learner support. For us, digital transformation is not simply about adopting technology. It is about making learning easier, more flexible, more engaging and more meaningful for every learner.

My recent visit to the Headquarters of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver, Canada, was particularly encouraging. The visit opened new avenues for international collaboration in digital education, AI-enabled learning, digital pedagogy, faculty development, Open Educational Resources, micro-credentials, teacher education, and capacity building. Our discussions have also resulted in a structured framework for long-term collaboration. We now look forward to translating these discussions into concrete academic initiatives. We will learn from global experience while sharing BRAOU’s experience of taking education to large and diverse learner communities. This partnership will add a strong international dimension to BRAOU’s digital journey.

New Professional and Skill Programmes

Along with expanding online education, BRAOU is strengthening its Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes. The University has recently received UGC approval for M.A. Education, M.A. Education (School Administration), Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) and M.Sc. Geography, and for the continuation of B.Ed. and B.Ed. Special Education. These programmes further broaden our academic offerings and respond to the changing needs of learners and society, particularly in education, social work, science and inclusive teacher education.

Along with online education, we are also expanding our academic programmes through the ODL mode. Our focus is on programmes that respond to the changing needs of learners and society, particularly in professional education, emerging areas, and skills and employability. A university today must do more than award degrees. It must help learners gain knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and opportunities to build better futures.

Another important area of our development is Teacher Education and Professional Development. With our existing teacher education programmes and the newly approved M.A. Education and M.A. School Administration, BRAOU is emerging as a comprehensive centre for teacher education. We are also working towards establishing BRAOU TEA – BRAOU Teacher Education Academy, which will provide a platform for teacher training, professional development, digital pedagogy, AI in education, inclusive education, assessment, educational leadership, and continuous capacity building. The Government of Telangana has also expressed interest in collaborating with BRAOU to help working teachers pursue higher education, professional qualifications, and continuous professional development.

International Language Learning Centre

We are also strengthening our Language Learning Centre and expanding opportunities for foreign-language education. We are developing German as a key initial programme and exploring Japanese, Korean, and other languages. Our aim is to equip learners with language skills that support higher education, employment, and greater engagement with the wider world. Skills and employability are another important part of our agenda. Through collaborations with organisations such as TCS-iON, RASCI, Sri Ramananda Tirtha Rural Development Institute, and Cyient Foundation, we are creating opportunities for vocational learning, internships, apprenticeships, and employment-oriented training. We want academic learning and practical skills to go hand in hand, so our learners are better prepared for the world of work.

While embracing new technologies and opportunities, we remain firmly committed to BRAOU's core purpose—to reach the unreached. Through initiatives such as Samatha and Nipuna, the University is creating educational and skill-development opportunities for disadvantaged learners, including tribal communities, transgender persons, Divyangjan, and economically and socially underprivileged sections. This commitment reflects the vision of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, for whom education was a key instrument of equality, dignity, empowerment, and social transformation.

There is much more to do. Our journey ahead will focus on digital transformation, academic expansion, teacher education, skill development, international collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and stronger learner support. We are building on BRAOU’s long experience in Open and Distance Learning while embracing new technologies and opportunities. I sincerely thank the Government of Telangana, UGC, the Commonwealth of Learning, our academic and institutional partners, faculty, staff, alumni, and, above all, our learners for their continued support and confidence in the University. BRAOU has always taken education to the people. Now, together, we are taking BRAOU to the next level—digital, inclusive, global, and future-ready.

With warm greetings and best wishes to all.
